WORLD SPACE WEEK-2006 CELEBRATED

Celebration of World Space Week is a progarmme of the United Nations which is annually held between 4 and 10 October aimed at creating awareness about Space Science among the School students around the world. About 55 countries participate in this international space event since 1999 and Bangladesh entered to the list in 2003.

This year, Celebration of World Space Week was held in two places of Bangladesh. The main event was held at Enayetpur, a village under Sirajganj district on 5 October in the premises of Mohakash Bhavan, (Space House) where hundreds of students from 17 Schools had participated in Space Arts, Debate, Quiz etc. Among the speakers who delivered their lectures were Dr. A. R. Khan, the President of Bangladesh Astronomical Society and the former Professor of Applied Physics, University of Dhaka, Dr. Ali Asgar, the former Head of the Department of Physics, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Sadre Ula, the Professor of Electronics and Computer Engineering, University of Wyoming, USA and Mr. F. R. Sarker, the General Secretary of Bangladesh Astronomical Society and the National Coordinator for World Space Week in Bangladesh. The Celebration started at 9 am and ended at 2 pm followed by multimedia presentation including a video clip of spaceflight of Anousheh Ansari, the first woman space tourist in the world who had visited International Space Station between 18 and 29 September.

The second event of World Space Week held in the auditorium of Maple Leaf International School, Dhanmundi, Dhaka. Among the speakers who delivered their lectures in it were Mr. F. R. Sarker, the General Secretary, Bangladesh Astronomical Society and the National Coordinator for World Space Week in Bangladesh, Mr. S. Doha, Teacher of Physics, Master Amit, a student of Maple Leaf International School. It was followed by Video presentation and question answer event.

The Celebrations of World Space Week-2006 both at Enayetpur and Dhaka were spectacular and the organizers are encouraged to observe the perennial zeal and interest of the School students to learn about Space Science.
